The Merchant of Venice

A Venetian merchant named Antonio borrows money from a Jewish merchant Shylock for his wedding. Antonio takes an interest free loan – on one condition – if he cannot repay the loan by the agreed date, Shylock will take one pound of flesh from Antonio. Unfortunately Antonio’s merchant ship crashes, and is unable to pay the money back. Shylock proceeds to sue Antonio, asking him to fulfil his end of the bargain. To save Antonio’s life, Bassanio’s fiancé pretends to be the lawyer during the court proceedings. She agrees to Shylock’s demand, and Antonio must cut a pound of his flesh with no bleeding, according to the original agreement. Eventually, Shylock lose the court proceedings, and he loses his property. After the tumultuous court case, the dust settles and the couples can be together.
